Why you should play a round of golf with just a 7 iron, wedge and a putter

You are thinking, why the hell would I want to do this? If you're an avid golfer that wants to improve then doing what it says in the title will be something that you will need to do. On a regular basis, you see people on the range that will continuously hit their driver over and over and over and over...

The driver is the club that you will use less than most unless you are constantly hitting it in the water, therefore needing to reload the tee. You will spend most of your time hitting iron shots from the fairways, wedges from the bunkers, rough and surrounding area but most of all, putting. My mother told me to always make sure I could walk before running and the same rules apply to playing golf. If you have not mastered your irons or feel they are not strong enough then take yourself onto the course and restrict yourself from hitting it.

Your short game involves so many things and the wedge is a club that will be your magical wand. A wedge will get you out of a bunker, out of the thick rough, allow you to master chipping around the green and create some spectacular shots. It was once said that Tiger Woods used to practice in the woods with 3 golf balls and a wedge and put himself in impossible situations to get out of. Well, I think his golf game speaks for itself.

The putter fulfills 80% of your golf game because that's the club that spends most of it's time in your hands. Grab your wedge, chip 40 balls onto a chipping green and then putt them all (obviously removing the balls before putting anymore than the cup can handle, because that would be silly now, wouldn't it). Practice your approaches with a 7 iron, if you miss the green, make sure you chip onto the green and putt the ball. That's the way you improve your greenside skills. It starts with your driver or wood but don't forget that it always finishes with your irons, wedges and then your putter.
